A survey by The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) highlights the current state of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices in the transport and logistics industry. Conducted from March to December 2023, the survey gathered insights from over 200 industry stakeholders. Findings revealed that while many companies recognize the benefits of ESG compliance—such as enhanced competitiveness and reduced operational risks—there remains significant uncertainty and reluctance to fully implement these practices.
The survey also identified a gap in support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which often lack the resources and knowledge to advance ESG initiatives. Although large companies demonstrate greater commitment to sustainable practices, 81% of respondents expressed uncertainty regarding government funding for ESG projects. Notably, over 90% indicated that increased government incentives would encourage them to adopt more robust ESG measures. Overall, the research underscores the need for clearer guidelines and financial support to foster a more sustainable logistics sector in Hong Kong.
